How to transfer Quickbooks to another computer?

MilenJac

Hey

I use Quickbooks because it is a beneficial accounting program for my daily business operations. However, I have been experiencing an error for the past few days that is interfering with my job and preventing me from accessing my company files.

I’m moving QuickBooks to a different computer because I’m annoyed by the frequent errors that appear anytime I open it. However, I am still determining the process because I want my data to be transferred securely. Please guide me on how to transfer Quickbooks to a new computer.

Hello, @MilenJac. It's fantastic that you've joined this community. Yes, without a doubt. We will walk you through the entire procedure to see how it can be completed.

You are initially aware that this procedure might become complex and challenging, with obstacles such as transferring your valuable database to a new computer and integrating it with the updated system. You're lucky since QuickBooks provides a tool that makes it easy to move your crucial data.

Therefore, we'll guide you through every step of moving QuickBooks to a new computer, from updating the program to backing up your company files. So let's get going.

The QB Migrator Tool is the best option for reinstalling QuickBooks Desktop or transferring it to another machine. Let's examine its definition and application.

The QB migrator tool

The Migrator Tool provides a way for single-user users using the US edition of QB Desktop 2018 or another version to move QuickBooks and up to three company files to a different device. However, you need Company Admin access to use the Migrator Tool.

You will require the following to use the Migrator Tools:

  • A new computer with internet access;
  • A flash drive with a USB port that can hold your QuickBooks data and has enough empty capacity;
  • The required amount of free space, usually between 150 and 250 MB, will be specified by the QuickBooks Migrator Tool.

  • The operation of the QB Migrator Tool

To obtain access to all transferred data, you will first be able to create a strong password. Since you will only need this password once when using the QuickBooks Migrator Tool, keep it secure. To back up your files, you'll also require a flash drive. Next, do the following actions:

  • Using the program, copy the last three opened company files, along with their backup files, to a USB drive.
  • Use the USB flash drive to move files to the new computer; the QB Migrator Tool will handle all the technical details.
  • The application will install the relevant version of QuickBooks Desktop on your new computer and set it up with your files.

  • How do you utilize the QuickBooks Migrator Tool and set it up?

Here are some additional details regarding the procedure.

    On an old PC:

  • Step 1: Open QuickBooks, choose Utilities from the File menu, and then click Move QuickBooks to a new computer.
  • Step 2: Select "I'm Ready" and follow the directions to establish a one-time password.
  • Step 3: Follow the instructions to choose the USB flash drive, then wait for the file transfer to finish.

  • On the new PC:

  • Step 4: Put the USB flash disk in step four. Because of the Windows security settings, the QB Migrator Tool will not launch automatically.
  • Step 5: After manually opening the flash drive to view its contents, click twice on the Move_QuickBooks.bat file to start the QuickBooks Migrator.
  • Step 6: After entering the password you generated, choose Let's go. Await the completion of the QuickBooks Migrator Tool's tasks, which may take a while depending on the size of your company file or files and the speed of your computer and internet.

  • Note 1: After you're done, the QuickBooks Migrator Tool will immediately delete the QB files from the flash drive device. Your old PC will still have these files, though. To prevent accidentally using the incorrect file or files, we advise renaming the file or files on the old device.
Note 2: If the QB Migrator does not launch after running the file, verify that your Windows version is current and up to date.

Hello, @FujiMin knowing that you have attempted each of the previously listed actions is encouraging. However, don’t worry if you’ve experienced any difficulties with it. We are available to help you with more alternative solutions. Thus, just review the following details:

Transferring QuickBooks Desktop manually from an old PC to a new one

QuickBooks can be manually moved from an old computer to a new one. The following are the steps in this process:

Step 1: Make a backup of the QuickBooks license and company files.

    • The first step is to back up the company’s files and the QuickBooks product license on an external drive.
    • The next step is installing the most recent QuickBooks version on the new system.
    • Download & restore that backup file to the new PC after completing that.
    • Next, remove the QuickBooks program.

Step 2: Putting the company file backup back on the new PC

    • Installing QB on the fresh setup is the first step for the user.
    • Next, put the storage device in.
    • After that, launch QuickBooks and select the file menu.
    • Select the open & restore company option later.
    • Select “restore a backup copy” and then “next tab.”
    • Next, select the local backup option & navigate to the backup file made on the previous machine.
    • The final steps are to select the spot in the newly installed system where you want to save the backup and select the “Save” tab.
